โนรา เป็นศิลปะพื้นเมืองภาคใต้ เรียกว่า โนรา แต่ คำว่า มโนราห์ หรือ มโนห์รา นั้น เป็นคำที่เกิด ขึ้นมาเมื่อสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา โดยการนำเอา เรื่อง พระสุธน-มโนราห์ มาแสดงเป็นละครชาตรี จึงมีคำ เรียกว่า มโนราห์ ส่วนกำเนิดของโนรานั้น สันนิษฐานกันว่าได้รับอิทธิพลจากการ ร่ายรำของอินเดียโบราณก่อนสมัยศรีวิชัย ที่มา จากพ่อค้าชาวอินเดีย สังเกตได้จากเครื่องดนตรีที่ เรียกว่า เบ็ญจสังคีตซึ่งประกอบโหม่ง ฉิ่ง ทับ กลอง ปี่ ใน ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องดนตรีโนรา และท่ารำของโนรา อีกหลายท่าที่ละม้ายคล้ายคลึงกับการร่ายรำของ ทางอินเดีย และเริ่มมีโนราเป็นกิจลักษณะขึ้นเมื่อ ประมาณปี พุทธศักราชที่ 1820 ซึ่งตรงกับสมัยสุโขทัยตอนต้น
ปัจจุบันเชื่อกันว่าโนราเกิดขึ้นครั้งแรกที่ หัวเมืองพัทลุง คือ ตำบล บางแก้ว จังหวัด พัทลุง แล้ว แพร่ขยายไปยังหัวเมืองอื่นๆ ของภาคใต้ จน ไปถึงภาคกลาง และกลายเป็นละครชาตรี และ จังหวะ ตะลุง ที่ได้รับอิทธิพล ในตำนานเล่า กันมาว่า เจ้าเมืองพัทลุง มีชื่อว่า พระยา สายฟ้าฟาด มีลูกสาวที่ชื่อ ศรีมาลา ซึ่ง มีความสามารถในการร่ายรำมาก ได้เกิดตั้งครรภ์โดยที่ยังไม่ได้แต่งงาน เชื่อกันว่า เป็นท้องกับเทวดา พระยาสายฟ้าฟาดเห็นดังนั้น ก็โกรธมาก สั่งให้นำนางศรีมาลาไป ลอยแพในทะเล ( คือ ทะเลสาปสงขลา) และ แพได้ไปติดที่เกาะใหญ่ นางศรีมาลา ก็ได้ให้กำเนิดลูกชาย โดยตั้งชื่อว่า เทพสิงหล ซึ่งมีนัยความว่า ลูกของเทวดา นางศรีมาลา ได้ฝึกให้เทพสิงหลฝึกร่ายรำ ซึ่งเทพสิงหล ก็สามารถร่ายรำได้สวยงามมาก และร่ายรำ มีชื่อเสียงมากที่เกาะใหญ่ จนรู้ไปถึง หูพระยาสายฟ้าฟาด ซึ่งพระยาสายฟ้าฟาด ก็ยังไม่รู้ว่าหลานตัวเอง ก็ได้ เชิญไปรำในราชสำนัก ฝ่ายนางศรีมาลานั้น ก็น้อยเนื้อต่ำใจเมื่อครั้งที่ถูกลอยแพ ก็บอกกับคนที่มาติดต่อว่า โนราคณะนี้จะไปรำได้ แต่ต้องปูผ้าขาวตั้งแต่ริมฝั่งที่ลงจากเรือจนไปถึงตำหนัก พระยาสายฟ้าฟาดก็ตอบตกลง ดังนั้น เทพสิงหลจึงไปรำในราชสำนัก เทพสิงหลรำได้สวยงามมาก จนพระยาสายฟ้าฟาด ก็ตกตะลึงในความสวยงาม จึงถอดเครื่องทรงที่ทรงอยู่ให้กับเทพสิงหล แล้วบอกว่า "เครื่อง แต่งกายกษัตริย์ชุดนี้มอบให้เป็นเครื่องแต่งกายของโนรานับแต่นี้เป็นต้นไป" เทพสิงหลจึงบอกว่าแท้จริงแล้ว เป็นหลานของพระยาสายฟ้าฟาด พระยาสายฟ้าฟาดจึงรับโนราไว้ในราชสำนัก และให้สิทธิแต่งกายเหมือนกษัตริย์ทุกประการ
